Description
In the previous painting, a patient sits in his doctors office and of all the emotions he emanates, fear is his momentous foe. On this point many chronically ill people can relate.
Fear is an emotion that can be useful, but when fear begins to rule a life, the result can be devastation. Here, the spirit rises out of her head to a stark landscape, surprised and afraid, she takes the bait and beings to hold onto a tree, a tree that hides its dangerous roots beneath the earth. Before she realizes it, fear has gotten its roots into her deeply and now she is held by, yet at the same time, she continues to hold onto the Tree of Fear.
By choosing to hold onto her fear(s), the law of freewill is demonstrated in its saddest form. As she continues to choose this path, the roots continue to grow ever deeper and stronger into the mind. Strangling her Spirit of its motivation to break away, wondering through the desert of misunderstandings and loneliness, she can no longer see the beauty the world and its humanity have to offer.
All is not lost, a strong, large outstretched hand reaches toward a light. This amazing part of her brain, or even perhaps the soul itself, seems to realize the predicament the spirit has found herself in. It then tries hard to look beyond the Tree of Fear to the peaceful colors seen through the break in the clouds of sadness and depression. She sees the light of love and compassion, forgiveness and understanding. As long as the Soul continues to see this light, Hope remains and her spirit will not be lost in this desert for ever.
At first glance, it may seem pessimistic to paint about fear, yet all of us, at one time or another, have found us facing a choice. Hold on, or let go. A constant reminder of what happens when we choose fear over facing whatever it is in our lives that have caused us to be afraid. This painting has a powerfully positive effect on me, a constant reminder of the power of Fear.
Giving into fear is giving up on hope. Giving up on hope is giving up on life.
